Michael Beale said at the very beginning of the transfer window that he was hoping for between 2-4 new players, depending on availability and getting the right deal, this was a consistent message throughout and one that he never hid from.

We would all have liked to have seen four players of the quality of Nicolas Raskin and Todd Cantwell, however, January is a notoriously difficult time to get value for money – especially if you are working on a budget.

Looking further into what the Gers gaffer has said though, the only position that he might be disappointed not to add someone is centre-half. He was honest enough to admit that he has his eye on a striker for the summer, the goalkeeper situation is not one that he is worried about and that it will also be rectified at the end of the season.

Speaking to the Rangers media team, after the announcement of Raskin, Beale may have given a hint as to who we might be targeting for key positions when the dust settles on 2022/23:

“As a football club, Nicolas is a player that we have tracked for a long time and we are very pleased to welcome him and his family to Rangers.

“He is a young player that has already amassed good experience both in domestic and European competition. I am looking forward to working with him closely and integrating him into our team.”

There is definitely a pattern emerging in terms of Ross Wilson and how we recruit players in that most of them have been watched for a long time and there is usually a favourable contract situation. Whether we like it or not, until the renovations to Ibrox are completed and our player trading model has been established for a few years, we will be shopping on a budget.

A centre-half who we have been linked with before, is available on a free transfer, to be the first player through the door come the 1st of July – you heard it here first.
