The leaked list of scouts attending the Preston v Coventry City set tongues wagging this week and with Rangers name being amongst those casting a watchful eye, speculation instantly turned as to who exactly Jamie Miller might have been keeping tabs on.

Of those playing, Gustavo Hamer is the most obvious name with Rangers having been interested as far back as the spring of 2021, positive talks were reported but nothing concrete ever materialised. The Dutch youth international has since drawn interest from the Premier League showing that he is destined for bigger things.

But why were Rangers linked with the 25-year old in the first place?

Malmo video scout Marc Lamberts provided Vital Rangers with a data visual to give a brief insight into what sort of player Hamer is – in short, he is exactly the sort of player that we need to partner Nico Raskin in midfield.

Like Raskin, Hamer is capable of everything. He has the aggression to play as a defensive midfielder and natural desire to win the ball back, think Rino Gattuso and you get an idea of his playing style – he has the yellow card count to back it up too. He can also link play in the final third if it is needed.

Midfield is an area in particular that we need to upgrade because, at the moment, there isn’t enough consistency. We know what John Lundstram and Glen Kamara can do on their day but they just aren’t having their day often enough nowadays and that’s without the issue of having to replace Scott Arfield and Steven Davis.

Younger, more dynamic and more hungry, players on the upward trajectory of their careers is what we need and Hamer continues to tick a lot of the boxes for what we should be looking for.
