Michael Beale has obviously targeted the midfield as an area of the park that needs to be regenerated with the signings of Todd Cantwell and Nico Raskin.

Other than John Lundstram who was signed in 2021 and Ryan Jack, who was already at the club, the whole unit has been together since 2018 with the £50,000 being spent on Glen Kamara as the only financial outlay until this January.

With Jack, Steven Davis and Scott Arfield all out of contract in the summer, it leaves Kamara as the only saleable asset left from the middle of the park and, at 27-years old, he is at a crossroads in his career despite having a contract until 2025 which could see him leave the club approaching his 30th birthday. There was a rumoured £10million transfer to Nice but it came to nothing before this season kicked off.

Beale clearly loves Kamara but it might not necessarily be down to him if an acceptable offer comes in, however, following on from Alan Hutton’s comments that he thinks the Finland international could now stay at Rangers, transfer journalist Dean Jones, speaking to GiveMeSport, also thinks that the time has passed for Ross Wilson to cash in on a player who is still highly valuable:

“The stance I’ve heard on this ever since Beale came in is that he is a player he really trusts and would like to use as he steers his way through this season.

“And if we see enough of him between now and the end of the term, as I would expect us to, he will most likely stick around. There’s not the level of interest there once was either.”

If he doesn’t go this summer, then I don’t think he will and what is more likely is that we will see another year added to his current contract.

Playing alongside the likes of Lundstram, Jack and Davis, Kamara – in Beale’s system – just hasn’t looked the same player, however, the arrival of both Nico Raskin and Todd Cantwell should give him a new lease of life and remove the heavy burden of having to link the midfield and the attack.

Kamara is good at what he does; retaining possession under pressure, keeping the ball when the game state needs it and breaking up opposition play but, against most teams in the Scottish Premiership, this isn’t enough when teamed with more defensive players, hopefully, alongside the likes of Cantwell and Raskin, we will see more of what he is good at – if not, it could be a long few years watching him play horizontal passes to the full-backs.
