When a list of scouts’ names was released for the Preston v Coventry City Championship fixture earlier this week, featuring Rangers Jamie Miller, thoughts immediately turned towards who might be getting watched.

Gustavo Hamer was the obvious name, Liam Lindsay another but, a report in The Sun has claimed that it was Freddie Woodman who was the main attraction as Rangers set about planning for life after Alan McGregor.

Former England Under-21 international Woodman has not long signed for Preston so he will command a decent fee but, according to the report, they are willing to entertain selling the 25-year old:

“Rangers are eyeing a £3.5million summer swoop for keeper Freddie Woodman.

“SunSport can reveal the Preston No 1 is on the radar of Gers boss Michael Beale.

“Ibrox scouts have watched the 25-year-old a number of times already this season, and again ran the rule over him as he kept a clean sheet against Coventry City at Deepdale on Tuesday night.

“They have already made it clear to interested parties they will listen to offers.

“But they will not let him go on the cheap, as he still has two years remaining on his deal.”

Rangers will be looking for a new keeper in the summer and we have already seen a a few names being linked with the post, opinions will always differ but there doesn’t seem to be any that I would be worried about having between the sticks should they be signed.

It is a position that Ross Wilson has to get absolutely right, being a good shot stopper isn’t enough, mental strength and concentration are equally as important given how long a Rangers keeper can go without having anything to do before being called into action.

Woodman has good experience, is young for a number one and – if the fee is correct – well within our price range, add him to the ever growing list of potential candidates to replace a genuine Gers legend.
