Michael Beale inherited a squad that he largely helped to build, one that is now bloated with midfielders who don’t seem fit for the purpose of the new manager’s style of play or tactical plan.

In Ryan Jack, Glen Kamara and John Lundstram, we have three players who are neither defensive, box-to-box or attacking midfielders and neither of them seem to particularly excel in any given field required for the engine room.

In signing Nicolas Raskin and Todd Cantwell, Beale has added quality and depth to midfield but there is more work to be done with Darius Olaru a name that has re-emerged in recent days as a potential summer target, analyst Patrick Caskie explaining what we could expect from the 24-year old Romanian international:

“Olaru’s close to the complete package as an 8. Still, success at that price would be contingent on him increasing his prolificacy in front of goal, which is possible but unlikely.

“£5m could be used better elsewhere, although should the fee drops relevant concerns do as well.”

Rangers were quoted £5m for Olaru when he still had two years left to run on his current contract, however, when the window next opens he will be down to the last 12-months and Steaua Bucharest might be easier to negotiate with.

If you offered me the chance to sell Kamara and sign Olaru and make a profit, not only would the squad look more balanced but, we’d also have a few extra million in the bank account, a move that makes sense in more ways than one.
