Former Gers linked striker freed by club as £5m rated 16 goal international becomes available

|

Another former England teammate of Steven Gerrard has become available after Danny Welbeck followed the fate of Jack Wilshere and has been released by his club Watford.

The Manchester United academy graduate has had a similar problem to the Rangers linked midfielder of late in that he has struggled to keep himself fit enough to make an impact, there has never really been any doubting his talent, he’s just not been able to withstand the rigours of top flight football.

Welbeck has been the subject of a potential move to Ibrox before, however, the gaffer is not short of forward options at this moment in time and a move for the England man would be highly unlikely, but you never know.

He would offer a similar skillset to that of Kemar Roofe in that he is capable of playing centrally or in any support role in the forward line, he may not have the pace that he used to have, however, he does still remain sharper than most Scottish Premiership defenders.

Choose one - Welbeck or Wilshere?

As with Wilshere, it wouldn’t do any harm to offer training facilities to the £5million rated striker to get a closer look at what the 29-year old is capable of, he managed 20 appearances last season for Watford and has enjoyed his longest period of fitness since overcoming a variety of knee and ankle issues at his previous club.

It might be a long shot and one that could go either way in terms of success, but what is the point of having a manager with the contacts book of Steven Gerrard if you aren’t going to take advantage of them?
