Rangers accounts were released this week and, for once, they made for pleasant reading.

Even when considering the monies that had to be paid back to directors and to settle contract disputes, we were still able to post a profit. A far cry from the days of barely being able to cover the wages to the extent that both Ibrox and the training centre became neglected.

There was always a sense of frustration as to why we didn’t make further additions to the squad in the summer after qualifying for the Champions League and raking in so much money from transfers, however, Football Insider believes that there may be more available in the kitty in the coming window:

“Analysis of the Rangers accounts from Football Insider has showed the club have a relatively strong liquidity position with £13m of cash in the bank.

“That leaves the club well placed to strengthen Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s squad in the January window should the club continue their overhaul of the summer.

“The board have pointed out that there has been investment of over £24m in the playing squad over the last two years.”

The January window is a notoriously hard one to sign targets depending on what market the recruitment team is looking at. For example, there are some players in Scandinavia who will be out of contract and others who will, potentially, be looking to move on with their seasons coming to an end. Clubs in mainland Europe tend not to want to lose their best players halfway through the season.

It is though, the time to start talking to potential pre-contract agreement options, those who have entered into the last six-months at their current clubs, sometimes, as with the case of Glen Kamara, getting them in early can be a very cost-effective way of going about your business.

Given our injuries, I don’t think this squad is far away but we all know where we would need to strengthen, oh how we’d all love £13m to go out and add an attacking midfielder and a goal-scoring right winger to the squad – and I’m sure Gio feels exactly the same.
