Even before Cedric Itten was sold to Young Boys there was a definite need for Rangers to add another striker to Giovanni van Bronkchorst’s squad.

One name mentioned – mainly between fans and Vital Rangers – is Ross Stewart, the Sunderland striker who has just made his Scotland debut against Armenia off the back of a season where he scored an impressive 26 goals to help his side return to the Championship.

After the club announced a friendly with Sunderland during the Portuguese training camp, the management team will get to have  close look atthe 23-year old striker, something that former Ger, Alex Rae, reckons could be useful if he is actually a target, as erpored by The Daily Record:

“This will be a good chance for Gio to get a good look at Ross up close.

“I’m sure they will have already done their homework on him. He had a prolific season last year and he’s had a lot of clubs looking at him.

“I suppose this friendly will be an ideal opportunity to get a proper close-up examination of him against your Connor Goldsons and Calvin Basseys of this world.

“From that point of view, it would be a good test for the lad and, if he is a target for Rangers, a good chance for them to assess his strengths.”

Stewart is a good striker but I’m not sure if he would be good enough to lead the line week in, week out, as a back up though, his ability to play in a wider role would stand him in good stead and, if the price is right, he could be an asset.

Other than Mateo Cassierra, we’ve not really seen many names linked in terms of forwards but I’d be surprised if we aren’t keeping an eye on Stewart’s situation given that he has just one year left on his contract.
