Morelos – no longer worth £20m to Rangers

I’ve said it before, and I’ll no doubt say it again, but, a player is only worth what a club values him at and what the buying club is willing to pay.

It sounds like common sense, however, there are so many factors that go into deciding how much a player is really worth to a club.

Take Alfredo Morelos for example, I’ve no doubt that – given his record since signing for Rangers – he should be a £20million plus player and that last summer we were right to turn bids of over £16million from Lille and holdout for this figure, now though, I’m not so sure.

The single, biggest reason, that I don’t think we’ll sell the Colombian international for the long held valuation isn’t because of Covid-19, or because he didn’t score as many goals last season, or even because of anything to do with his contract – it’s because he just isn’t worth as much to the team as he used to be.

It sounds harsh, but it’s true.

A couple of years ago, if Alfredo Morelos was out of form, so were Rangers, it was as simple as that, now though we have much more depth to our team.

How many players do Rangers have at the Euros this summer?

The additions made last summer in Kemar Roofe, Ianis Hagi and Cedric Itten have added variety, creativity and goals, Ryan Kent has improved again plus we have signed Fashion Sakala already, we can cope without Morelos.

This doesn’t make him any less of a player but we no longer rely on him as much as we used to, a fee around the £15m mark would be great business for Rangers, not that I wouldn’t put it past Ross Wilson to still get a record fee for our talismanic front man though.
