There are few Rangers fans who wouldn’t tell you that centre-half is a priority area when it comes to the January transfer window.

The contract status of Connor Goldson, added to the injury records of Filip Helander and Leon Balogun mean that at least one new defender needs to be brought in as soon as possible – Jack Simpson and Niko Katic looking like they have been deemed surplus to requirements.

One obvious target is John Souttar but it is looking increasingly likely that he will be heading to England, Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City said to be interested in his signature, the latter, ironically, to help cover his brother who is injured.

There has though been a recent report in De Gelderlander, a Dutch media outlet, that has claimed Rangers are continuing to “follow” Danilho Doekhi, the 23-year old Vitesse Arnhem captain who is now available to discuss terms on a possible pre-contract agreement, however, the report claims that his manager would release him in January if the price was right.

Dinamo Zagreb and Napoli are also named as keeping an eye on the youth international’s situation and Rangers would do well to move quickly on a player who’s value is only going to go in one direction.

Being able to secure a player like Doekhi on a pre-contract would free up money elsewhere for other targets who may require a fee, it’s as low risk a transfer as Ross Wilson could ask for and one that would please the manager and fans alike.

As always, there isn’t much coming out of Ibrox, let’s hope we don’t have to wait long until we see him standing at Ibrox with the scarf raised above his head.
