As we have seen over the last few months, the reliable sources when it comes to all things Rangers are The Heart and Hand podcast and The 4th Official, both non-mainstream media sites proving to be accurate on the appointment of Giovanni van Bronckhorst and the sale of Nathan Patterson to Everton.

Vital Rangers has already covered our interest in New York City FC’s James Sands with The 4th Official confirming that a deal could be imminent:

“When it comes to incomings, Rangers are definitely interested in midfielder James Sands. I have had a talk with 3 people close to the deal and the move is definitely something that should happen.

“The 21 year old star can not only play in midfield but also centre-half and his versatility is definitely one of his key selling points.

“Rangers are looking to get a deal done on loan. Sands is a highly rated player who wants to experience European football and that is forcing New York City to get a deal done on a player they would ideally want to sell if they can’t retain.”

The 21-year old has seven caps for the USA national team and offers a versatility in the middle and right-hand side of defence, as the site claims, he can also cover as a defensive midfielder – where Giovanni van Bronckhorst plans to use him remains to be seen, central defence and right-back the most likely options.

An 18-month loan deal is perhaps the most surprising aspect of the transfer but eases fears of over paying for a relatively untested player, an option to buy fee is expected to be included so that we have first refusal should he prove to be a success.

Given his profile, it would be a surprise if Sands – valued at £3.6million – is the player being identified to replace Connor Goldson – should he leave at the end of the season – however, given Calvin Bassey’s form, Leon Balogun might not get the extension that seemed a formality just a matter of weeks ago.

Although he will be largely unknown to Rangers fans, MLS has produced some exciting prospects and it is a market that we should keep an eye on, there is no shame in seeing the Scottish Premiership as a stepping stone to the Premier League and we should take full advantage of that if it can give us an edge when scouting new players.
