It looks like Rangers could be about to miss out on a player who seemed to be Steven Gerrard’s top summer target and, potentially, one of the main reasons that he returned to the Premier League.

Failure to qualify for the Champions League meant that the transfer budget was tightened and when Joey Veerman had an £8.5million price tag slapped on his head, there was no way that we were going as high as that.

Unfortunately, it looks like the sale of Nathan Patterson could come too late with PSV Eindhoven now tipped to land the Dutch youth cap for as little as £5m plus add ons, a fee that would be well within our budget for a definite starter and one who is expected to go on to bigger things in his career.

The deal hasn’t been announced yet but it would very much be an 11th hour bid that would be needed to hijack the move, Veerman’s form has been outstanding since the beginning of the season with four goals and seven assists in 20 appearances, qualities that are perfect for the number eight role in Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s system.

This is the moment to sign him before he becomes too expensive, we only need to look at former targets Lovren Majer and Niklas Dorsch who would now be way out of our reach financially, sometimes, the timing just doesn’t work out though.

Ross Wilson runs a tight ship when it comes to signing players but even he might be hard pushed to pull this one off.
