Todd Cantwell opened his goal-scoring account as a Rangers player on Saturday. He also put in the sort of box-to-box performance that is exactly what we are looking for from our designated attacking midfielder.

The 25-year old clearly loves getting on the ball and dictating play and, as we saw against Motherwell, he has brought a passing dimension that has sped up our attack and made us a lot more threatening. He isn’t the sort of player who will take three or four touches before playing a simple switch.

In this first clip, most of our midfielders would either play the short pass inside or go back to Ben Davies, however, Cantwell’s first thought is to go forwards, a welcome change to what we have been used to.

This second one is what we don’t see enough of, rather than building play up Cantwell sees the pass and goes for it. Antonio Colak normally fires this across the goal, when you look at his compilation videos, and has already scored a few of these for us. What ended up happening meant that the pass was largely forgotten about. Cantwell should have had another assist to his name though.

The question that Michael Beale must be trying to answer is how he can get the former Norwich City man and Malik Tillman on the same pitch as Ryan Kent and, towards the end of the 4-2 win aginst Motherwell, it looked as though he found an answer. Maybe Ross Wilson can spot a player after all.
