Quoted by Sky Sports in a wide-ranging interview, Jermain Defoe has urged his team-mates not to boast about being top of the league at this stage of the season.
We’ve played a fair few games now and we can see that we are genuine title contenders this year, which is great, but we also need to note just how close it is.
Celtic, though we loathe them, are champions and have been for a while, and we’re going to have to be bang at it week in, week out, in order to wrestle our crown back and claim number 55.
It’s something we can do with the likes of Defoe in the side, though, and it seems as though he is urging the rest of the players to keep their feet on the ground:
“You don’t want to boast about being top of the league, there’s still a long way to go.
“We have to respect our neighbours, everyone in the league and continue what we’re doing.”
Yes, we’re top of the league and we’ll let Celtic fans know about it but nothing is won in October and instead, we need to keep the performances high.
With players like Defoe around, though, that should be easily done.
