Rangers will look to move on players who are classed as “non-contributing” in the summer, players who are taking up space on the wage bill whilst spending most Saturdays sitting in the main stand with the best view of their team-mates.

There are a couple of reasons for this, one being that it frees up much needed money for new players but it also creates space for academy players to get more game time with the first-team.

One player who is expected to leave is Jack Simpson who has found himself miles down the pecking order to the extent that a left-back and central midfielder have been preferred when we have had injuries and suspensions at centre-half.

There was speculation in January that he might be away but he will definitely be expected to leave in the summer, the72.co.uk claiming that Birmingham City is the most likely destination for the 25-year old.

It was a signing that held little risk, he wasn’t signed to be a first choice or to threaten the places of Leon Balogun and Filip Helander, however, it just hasn’t worked out and he has rarely looked comfortable in a Rangers shirt.

We will need to add central defenders in the summer alongside the arrival of John Souttar, and for all that Simpson’s departure won’t have an effect on whether or not there will be funds available, Ross Wilson and Giovanni van Bronckhorst won’t want to go into the new season with him still forming part of the squad, when you are on a budget, quality always trumps quantity.
