A report has appeared online suggesting that Giovanni van Bronckhorst has to show the door to Rangers veteran Steven Davis.

Given the situation – the player’s age, fitness, present availability as well as the preferences of the Ibrox boss, all the signs point to a fond farewell at the end of this season for the Northern Ireland legend and that is exactly the point.

There is simply no chance that a four time championship winner, UEFA Cup finalist and a man who has had a key impact in the revival under Steven Gerrard, in his second spell at the club, including the iconic 55th title will be giving anything other than a departure fitting of the service and contribution he has given to Rangers.

Whilst pointing out the prominence of other midfielders this season and reasons for Davis’ lack of game with justification, FootballFanCast also stated:

“It is time for the Dutch head coach to brutally axe Davis from the club this summer. He must not offer the midfielder a new contract and should allow him to leave on a free transfer or retire instead.”

Any talk of a brutal axe for Steven Davis is unrealistic and simply very disrespectful. His situation will be dealt with amicably between the player, GvB and Ross Wilson.

Play On

For now, the 37-year old is adamant that he is feeling good and wanting to continue his career at club level as well as to add to his record 134 caps for Northern Ireland.

He spoke of frustrations with injury niggles and setbacks that come for a man of his age but his exemplary professionalism and dedication to his craft has allowed a position where he will still be able to feature at a decent level beyond his next birthday:

“Yeah, hopefully. I think it’s important, especially as you get older, you can’t look too far ahead and it’s important I just finish this season strongly and go from there.”

“I just want to concentrate on my football and enjoy my football and hopefully I’m in a good place mentally and physically to continue.”

Whatever happens next, the legacy of Steven Davis at Rangers is secured.
