Every Rangers fan knows that we need to start selling players to become self sufficient, but that doesn’t mean that every departure has to be a club record transfer fee.

“Every little helps” as the advert goes and, as we saw in the summer, getting fees for fringe players or ones deemed as “non-contributory” is just as important – George Edmundson and Jordan Jones brought in a combined seven figure sum, they all add up.

Next to go could be Jack Simpson and, as reported by Vital Rangers, there are clubs in England looking at the possibility of signing the centre-half who has yet to impress at Ibrox, The Telegraph revealing who exactly might make a move:

“QPR and Middlesbrough keeping tabs on Rangers centre-back – Rangers Jack Simpson has attracted interest from Championship clubs who are willing to bring him back to England.

“The 24-year-old arrived at Ibrox last season but has fallen behind Calvin Bassey in the pecking order and has made four appearances this season.

“QPR are looking at him to bolster their backline for the second half of the season, and he is also on the radar of Chris Wilder at Middlesbrough. Swansea are also monitoring him as clubs wait to find out whether he will be allowed to leave next month.”

The only issue that might prevent Rangers from allowing Simpson to leave next month is the African Cup of Nations and the likely involvement of Leon Balogun and Calvin Bassey, the latter wasn’t picked for the last round of internationals and has yet to make his debut for the Super Eagles so it would be a surprise if he does go.

Who did GvB make his competitive Rangers debut against as a player?

That would leave us with Bassey, Connor Goldson and, hopefully, a fully fit Filip Helander by the time the winter break is over which should be enough to see us through and to see Simpson given permission to leave.

There was no risk in signing Simpson, we managed to get him in early on a nominal fee but we would still be expecting to make a profit on him which would make a change from having to pay players off or see them leaving for nothing – not every signing will work out, such is the nature of football, but being able to turn the duds into a profit is an art form we have yet to master and one that will see Ross Wilson truly earn his money.
