Michael Beale may have picked out a striker and goalkeeper as being the two most important areas for recruitment this summer, however, with doubts about several midfielders and the impact that Nico Raskin and Todd Cantwell have made, a new addition for the engine room should be a priority.
Billy Gilmour being allowed to leave Brighton on loan when the transfer window re-opens means that we will see a return to a rumour that has never really gone away since he signed for Chelsea but it is a link to one of his international team-mates that has really raised a few eyebrows.
Speaking on Go Radio, via The Daily Record, former Gers skipper Craig Moore reckons that Scott McTominay would be a great addition to Beale’s squad:
“He would be amazing for Rangers.
“I don’t know what Rangers are looking at but to see someone like McTominay and it would only be a loan because that’s the only way a deal would be possible – would be great. But Man United would probably swallow a large part of that bill.
“It would make more sense, the loan scenario, being in Scotland and if it was Rangers domestically, Man United don’t want to strengthen their competitors.”
McTominay has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford due to seeing his game time being reduced this season, however, with Premier League clubs also likely to be interested and 200 Man Utd appearances to his name, I don’t think Rangers would have much chance of persuading him to head north – even if it was just on loan.
There is no doubting that, alongside Raskin and Cantwell, he would be a good fit in Rangers midfield. As we saw with his recent displays for Scotland he is more than capable of contributing at both ends of the park but I’d be surprised if, at 26-years old, he would be willing to take what would be a step back in terms of the quality of league that he is playing in.
McTominay would be amazing for Rangers, but so would Lionel Messi or Kylian Mbappe.
