Scott Arfield revealed in mid-week that he has no talks about extending his contract at Rangers, but that, at 33-years old, his focus remains the same – to work hard and press for a more regular starting slot.

He faces an uphill battle though given the signings that have been made and who we have been linked with, however, Arfield is the model professional and will continue to be a valuable asset for Steven Gerrard for as long as he is at the club, which might not be much longer if the Gers manager’s former England team-mate, Danny Mills is right, when he was asked if he thought that the Canadian internationals time at Ibrox was up, by Football Insider:

“You would expect so.

“If they’ve not come to you already and offered you something you have to be thinking about moving elsewhere.

“At 33, Rangers are probably thinking and have started to look at younger players.

“They’ve got enough experience and older players in the squad that they don’t need another.”

It’s not looking good for Arfield who’s influence isn’t quite what it used to be, for a player whose main attributes included his running power, pressing and ability to support team-mates at either end of the park he will obviously have to make adjustments as his body gets older.

This season very much feels like the beginning of the end for some of the players that Gerrard brought to the club and Arfield won’t be naive enough to think that he can stay at his boyhood club forever.
