No contract talks for Gers star as Wilson eyes replacement

|

Even after the late signing of Juninho Bacuna, Rangers have continuously been linked with midfielders, the biggest rumour and reported interest surrounding Blackburn Rovers Joe Rothwell.

The 27-year old has recently been compared, by his manager Tony Mowbray, to Allan Saint-Maximin and Adama Traore, however, for those of a certain age, the easiest comparison to make is with a certain Paul Gascoigne, given the ease at which he can turn defence into attack by running past opposition players.

Signing Rothwell would unfortunately put Scott Arfield further down the pecking order, the 33-year old now at a crossroads with his contract expiring at the end of the season and, as yet, no sign of any negotiations, as reported by the Glasgow Times:

“No there hasn’t been [any talks over a new deal] at the minute. It is up in May so we will see what happens with that.

“Fully focused about getting myself back in the team and getting the opportunity and we will see what happens with that.

“Of course, I am no different to any other player, whether you are 18 or 33 you want to be playing football.

“You want to be training during the week with something to look forward to at the weekend.

“It was all about doing the consistent things and when I got given my opportunity it was then all about trying to take it.”

Arfield played well on Sunday against Motherwell, he might have lost some of his running power but his ability to play one-touch football is still a valuable asset and you can always rely on him to pull the trigger from outside the box – a quality that some of our regular starters in midfield sometimes lack.

Given his position in the squad and his age, there will be other players that Ross Wilson will want to get tied down first, it will also depend on whether or not he is able to secure potential targets in January – Arfield is a very safe pair of hands, especially in the bigger games.

If it is to be his last season Arfield has been worth every penny since signing from Burnley, a great player on the pitch as well as a model professional off it, scoring the winning goal in an Old Firm game and the Scottish Premiership title is what every Rangers fan dreams of – a career to be proud of.
