As one door shuts, another opens, however, in this case though it’s windows we are talking about and one potential Rangers target who could well be on his way to Ibrox in January, if reports are to be believed.

The English Championship is known for how competitive it is, however, there are also a few decent players scattered about the lower leagues – Joe Aribo the perfect example of the bargains to be had.

Joe Rothwell of Blackburn Rovers could well be the latest and if his manager’s comments at the weekend are anything to go by, we could be in for a real treat, as told to the Lancashire Telegraph:

“We’ve been talking about how amazing Joe Rothwell is, just his technique and his outstanding ability to run with the ball.

“It’s not just good, he is the best in this league in my mind at running with the ball and would be one of the best in the Premier League.

“Adama Traore, and (Allan) Saint-Maximin at Newcastle, there aren’t many people who can run with the ball like Joe Rothwell, there are things he needs to get better at and that’s maybe why teams right at the top maybe haven’t looked at him.

“That’s why I sit with Joe and talked about things he has to get better at and when he does the world is his oyster. That’s down to the individual.”

It’s safe to say that Tony Mowbray is a fan. To compare Rothwell to Traore and Saint-Maximin is quite the claim when you consider that the pair are borderline unstoppable in full flight.

To be able to get a player of this quality – on a free – would be a real coup, he won’t be short of offers but we have a head start seeing as English clubs won’t be able to officially approach him until the last month of his contract – we, on the other hand, can speak to him as soon as the clock strikes midnight to signal the new year.

As we saw against Motherwell and from Ryan Kent’s exploits over the years, pace causes problems, as does the ability to beat a man and Rothwell has both – no wonder Mowbray gets excited speaking about him.
