It’s pretty clear that Allan McGregor won’t be our number one next season, the gradual decay of his considerable abilities is now at the stage where he has become an unfortunate liability.

Almost since he returned to the club the discussion has been about who we should get to replace him with Robby McCrorie long thought to be his natural successor, now that he is in his mid-twenties, if now isn’t the time then I’m not sure he will ever become anything other than a back-up.

Jon McLaughlin has signed a contract extension which makes him the favourite for the job but he should be starting already given that he has never put a foot wrong in a Rangers jersey and has spent most of this season watching the man in possession of the jersey cost his team on more than one occasion, however, if a report in The Daily Mail is accurate, it might be neither of the current Gers stoppers.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst

Back him.

Back him.

Sack him.

Sack him.

They claim that the interest in West Brom’s Sam Johnstone, which has been around for a while now, is very much real and that Giovanni van Bronckhorst is hoping to persuade him to turn down a move to the Premier League, where he will likely be an understudy, to sign for Rangers  – he is currently valued at over £7million but available on a free transfer.

The 29-year old England cap would certainly be a player that would arrive with a solid reputation and pedigree, he could also be trusted in terms of ability and be a lot more proactive when it comes to commanding his area. The only question would be whether or not his priority is how big his bank balance is or how much time he gets on the pitch.
