Rangers fans on social media were quick to notice something from the first session under Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Roy Makaay looking less than impressed at a spot of showboating when players were taking part in a simple possession drill.

By stating that “tricks are for the circus” and wanting players to “keep it simple” it’s safe to say that this is going to be a no nonsense management team, Makaay in particular doesn’t appear the sort to entertain anything less than 100% focus.

The suggestion that it was Ryan Kent that he was directing his ire at was soon dismissed by those that had watched the full video with shouts that he will be on his way out in January a spectacular conclusion to jump to off a simple throwaway comment.

There is another angle to what Makaay said though.

The Dutch have had more than a few decent wingers, the likes of Marc Overmars and Arjen Robben spring to mind and when you think back to the and how they used to play, they all have one thing in common – they keep it simple.

There was always a great saying about Robben in particular, you knew what he was going to do, and yet it was still impossible to stop him.

Hopefully, this is what the new coaching team can get out of Kent, when he keeps it simple, is direct and plays on the fringes of the opposition box, he is at his most dangerous. Robben made a career out of getting the ball on the right-hand side of the box before cutting inside onto his left foot and, invariably firing past a despairing keeper – that Kent can do this off either foot makes him even more of a threat, if he listens to the likes of Makaay.
