When Michael Beale chose to pick Antonio Colak to play against Hibernian instead of Alfredo Morelos, more than a few Rangers fans suggested that it could be with one eye on next season.

It makes sense if the Colombian has intimated that he won’t be extending his deal, however, the same can be applied to Ryan Kent. Surely, if he was leaving then he would also find himself sitting on the bench. The reality is probably more straightforward and Colak was given the nod because he played well at the weekend. Morelos has got decent numbers since Beale arrived but his performances have been consistent in their inconsistency.

Out of the two Kent is, probably, the one that the Gers gaffer would want to keep, yes, he should score more goals but his work in and out of possession continues to be a huge facet of our attacking play. Speaking to Football Insider, Alan Hutton reckons that Kent, when asked if we might have to wait until the summer, said:

“It seems to be going that way because if they were going to sign you would have thought they would have done it by now.

“I think Ryan Kent is one that I would definitely like to see stay, I think he has got a lot to offer moving forward.

“You look at the profile of the player that the manager wants to bring in, I think he suits that as well and is of a good age.”

After such a difficult year, aside from reaching the Europa League final and winning the Scottish Cup, it’s easy to see why Kent might want to consider his options, after all, he has been at Rangers since he was 21 and will be 27 next season. The next contract he signs will probably take him up to his 30s.

With interest from Leeds United and Burnley already, the chances are that he will have the opportunity to play in the Premier League, an opportunity that he might not get again.

  • William Laing says:

The difference between Kent and Morelos is that Kent is still trying and working hard for the team even when he is not playing well . Morelos isn`t.

100% – Morelos, like Glen Kamara has had one good game out of ten, despite having decent numbers. Need more moving forward.
