Rangers goalkeeper situation should have been sorted as long ago as 2021 after we won the league, if anything, when Allan McGregor returned to the club Ross Wilson needed to make sure that he didn’t take his eye off the ball in terms of potential replacements – as it is, we have a 41-year old who has regressed to the extent that we are counting the days until the end of the season.

Michael Beale revealed in January that we will be recruiting a new number one in the summer and we have seen a host of names linked ranging from full England internationals to promising youth caps from over seas.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, transfer journalist Dean Jones has claimed that the Gers gaffer will already know how much he has to spend on a stopper and that he will have a list of names ready to go.

“The goalkeeper situation is seemingly going to be a big one for them. We know that Beale’s got a budget to go and get the keeper that he wants, and he’s got the players in mind that he’d like to give a crack at that.

“I don’t think Allan McGregor has said he’s definitely going yet, but either way, they’ve got to figure out what happens in the future here because he’s not going to carry on forever. And it’s about getting the right character in there as well as the right player.”

Every successful team starts with a solid defence and it is imperative that our sporting director, who is already under pressure, gets this one right.

As far back as when Graeme Souness took charge we have seen a long line of top-class keepers at the club and identifying the next one is just as important as finding the right man to lead the attack at the other end of the park. Getting it wrong could be the difference between winning and losing the league.
