On Monday morning, Rangers return to the Champions League draw when the opponents for the third qualifying round will be revealed.

As part of the ‘league path’ in the race to the group stages of the showpiece tournament, the participants will be as follows:

Seeded
Benfica (POR)
Rangers (SCO)
Match 1: Dynamo Kyiv (UKR) / Fenerbahçe (TUR)
PSV Eindhoven (NED)

Unseeded
Monaco (FRA)
Match 2: Midtjylland (DEN) / AEK Larnaca (CYP)
Sturm Graz (AUT)
Union Saint-Gilloise (BEL)

So what we do know if that Rangers will be seeded, as will be the case for the playoff round, and will face one of the four unseeded options.

Then the serious stuff begins.

At first glance, Monaco are the obvious team to avoid given their pedigree and the additional spending that has been carried out in the Principality this Summer.

Midtjylland would provide an element of familiarity given the encounter between the sides in recent years, but they will need to dispose of Cypriots AEK first, if a repeat is to be on the cards.

Otherwise, Sturm Graz or Union Saint-Gilloise will be making their way to Ibrox in a contest where Rangers would be favourites over the two legs and rightly so. At the same time, there are no mugs at this level and any opponent will be taken seriously.

The significant disappointment of last season against Malmo is still fresh in the mind, as should be the case with the current squad who will be out to make amends and take that next step to meet the big boys in the Champions League groups.

That is the objective and the first hurdle becomes clear on Monday with the draw in Nyon, Switzerland taking place at 1100 UK time.
