“Interim manager Liam Rosenior has already signed attacking reinforcements up front in the form of James Collins and David McGoldrick, as well as wingers Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Tom Barkhuizen, all on free transfers. Academy graduate Jack Stretton also remains under contract, while the future of Colin Kazim-Richards, whose contract expired at the end of last season, remains unclear.”

“Roofe, who can play on either wing or through the middle, could further bolster the options for Rosenior going forward if any temporary move were to come to fruition.”

Incentive

Roofe’s current deal at Ibrox runs until the end of the 23/24 season and given his injury record, there is unlikely to be a queue of clubs waiting to shell out hard cash for the forward.

He has served a purpose since his arrival two seasons ago and more than played his part in delivering title 55. Looking ahead, he just can’t be relied upon to be available and that is a shame.

A return south near the Midlands area where he comes from could be tempting for the player but not so much in terms of playing in England’s third tier. Also at Ibrox, there is the massive obvious carrot of European football and playing for trophies, that will be hard to give up.

It is an interesting link but one that may be an ambitious move on Derby’s part as they aim to bounce back from relegation out of the Championship.
