Rangers have drawn Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise in the Champions League qualifiers, with the first leg being away on the 2nd of August and the return leg being at Ibrox on the 9th.

Our recent record against sides from the Jupiler Pro League is more than decent having lost just once in ten games and we should be looking to progress to the final play-off round, given the number of players we have scouted and been linked with from the region, you’d like to think that we’ll already have a good level of knowledge about them.

When Monaco were drawn out first, more than a few breaths were held, with lengthy sighs being let out when they were drawn against PSV Eindhoven, straight away, two big teams who have spent a lot of money this summer having to face each other, what more could you ask for?

Giovanni van Bronckhorst will be looking to do what Steven Gerrard couldn’t and get us into the group stages of Europe’s elite competition, he at least has the safety net of the Europa League group stages to fall back on but recruitment has suggested that we aren’t taking any chances and want to progress.

Finishing second in their first season back in the top flight behind Club Brugge – although they did top the league before the spilt – was enough to secure qualification for St Gilloise and, without being disrespectful, that their Champions League profile on UEFA’s website is blank tells it’s own story, however, pre-season draws against Brighton and Sporting Lisbon as well as a 4-0 win over Feyenoord sees them in good shape going into the fixtures.
