Rangers – as well as Celtic – are said to have made bids for Elsborg’s powerhouse centre-half Joseph Okumu.

Standing in excess of 6’3, the Kenyan international is exactly the type of imposing defender that can come in and make an impact at Ibrox – even better is his passing ability to allow him to potentially slot in to the Rangers way of playing.

However, with this reported interest, as covered by Glasgow Live, it does beg the question if further defensive reinforcements arrive at Ibrox this Summer – who will be leaving?

There has also been speculation on Dutch defender Danilho Doekhi to add to the mix.

As it stands, Steven Gerrard has already said that there will not be six central defenders at Ibrox next season – ideally he likes to have four with another possible option coming in the form of a youth player.

In the squad at present, there is Connor Goldson, Fil Helander, Leon Balogun, Jack Simpson, with Niko Katic on the injury comeback and George Edmundson returning from his loan spell at Derby.

All six will not remain, that is clear.

Situation

As for the current Elfsborg player, a media report in Sweden led to this follow up from Glasgow Live:

‘Reports in Sweden claim the Scottish Premiership pair (Old Firm) are battling it out with French sides Reims and Lorient for the Kenyan defender.’

‘Belgian outfit Gent are also thought to be in for Okumu, with Aftonbladet reporting that all five clubs have submitted offers for the 24-year-old.’

‘Earlier reports in Sweden credited Rangers with an interest as the Steven Gerrard looks to strengthen an already miserly backline.’

‘But it’s thought the two Ligue Un clubs are leading the way for his signature, with the Gers, Hoops and Gent behind them in the queue as things stand.’

‘Okumu is expected to leave Elfsborg this summer and they are confident of scooping a sizeable transfer fee.’

The asking price for the towering defender is said to be approximately £2.6 million.
