With Borna Barisic prepared to do battle at EURO2020, Rangers will be braced for further interest in their title winning full-back.

As a precaution, a list of possible reinforcements will be compiled and ready at Auchenhowie and one of those names on the list is almost certain to be Barry Douglas.

The Glaswegian has now parted company with Leeds United, although he spent the majority of last season in the English Championship with Blackburn Rovers, amassing over 30 appearances.

Now that Douglas is a free agent, he has the relative freedom of accepting the best offer that comes his way – which could include a return to Scotland.

Opportunity

Asked by the Yorkshire Evening Post if he was aware of ‘noise’ linking him with a move to Ibrox, the former Dundee United players responded with the following:

“It depends what opportunities present themselves,” said Douglas.

“As a family it would be a lot more difficult (to go abroad) now, we’ve got a newborn and a toddler, obviously we need to take that into consideration now.”

“But we’d definitely be open to trying something new and getting out of the comfort zone.”

“If it’s a new culture and a new language again absolutely. But if it’s domestic, great.”

As alluded to above, the player has had previous experiences in Poland and Turkey – that exposure has made him a better footballer and allowed him to make a very decent contribution to Leeds return to the Premier League.

For now at Ibrox, Barisic holds the left flank as his own, with Calvin Bassey in reserve but that could change depending how this Summer unfolds.

Barry Douglas on a free transfer, would be a solid – if unspectacular – addition to Steven Gerrard’s squad.
