Despite having been released by West Bromwich Albion earlier this summer and reported to be in discussions with Rangers about a potential switch to Ibrox, there has been no indication what the future holds for defender Gareth McAuley this season.

In early June, The Daily Record said that Director of Football Mark Allen had made contact with McAuley’s representatives about a potential switch to Glasgow, but since then there have been little developments on the move.

McAuley ticks plenty of boxes for Steven Gerrard’s Rangers this summer, especially after three failed bids for Millwall stopper Jake Cooper.

If bringing Cooper to Ibrox is not viable, then the new Gers boss needs to look at other defensive options.

David Bates and Bruno Alves have already left to club for clubs on the continent while Ross McCrorie appears to have made the much-welcomed permanent move into midfield.

With Fabio Cardoso completely frozen out of first team affairs, that leaves the two new boys as the only real recognised centre-backs available.

McAuley has vast experience at the top level, both for former clubs in the English Premier League and on the international stage with Northern Ireland. He may be 38 years of age, but as cover to other players he’s a great option. His footballing knowledge and leadership skills would also be a big bonus to Gerrard’s squad.

On a free transfer, making a move for the veteran defender seems to be something of a no-brainer, with or without the services of Jake Cooper.
