Rangers missed out on the opportunity to sign Chelsea defender Jake Clarke-Salter on loan during the summer transfer window, despite personal talks with Ibrox manager Steven Gerrard.

It came to light during an interview in The Guardian, with the 21-year-old revealing he met Gerrard at the Toulon tournament at the start of the summer with a view to making a temporary switch to Glasgow.

The talented defender eventually joined up with Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem, who have close ties with the English Premier League giants.

The centre-back would have been an exciting addition to the Rangers defensive line having garnered much hype coming through the Chelsea and England ranks.

He was part of the U20s side that won the World Cup at that level in 2017, the first English football side to win a global tournament since… well, you know when. He’s now a regular for the country’s U21s side and tipped to be a future senior international.

The youngster has gone on to make 13 appearances for the Dutch side, clearly fitting into life in Eredivisie, helping them to a 5th place position currently.

Thankfully for Rangers the defensive situation turned out alright with Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic giving Gerrard’s side a strong platform at the back and players like Joe Worrall and Gareth McAuley only adding more depth.
