Rangers are in the position where there needs to be a mini-rebuild in the summer, there is a core of good, experienced players with others who are yet to reach their peak, however, there will be a natural wastage that will also need to be addressed.

Michael Beale has spoken about how the squad is too big and that injuries have played their part in making additions without any departures, however, the summer could be a different story.

Unlike some managers when they take over a team though, Beale won’t have to try to sell players to make room with so many of his first-team squad coming to the end of their respective contracts with only Ryan Kent really pivotal to what the Gers gaffer wants to achieve.

To back this up, a report in Football Insider by former Sky Sports journalist Pete O’Rourke, has claimed that as many as four of Rangers regular midfield stalwarts over the last five years could be heading out the door:

“Rangers are laying the groundwork for an overhaul of their ageing midfield this summer.

“Steven Davis (38), Scott Arfield (34), and Ryan Jack (30) are all out of contract at the end of this season, with no sign of any potential renewals in the near future.

“Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (14 February) that there are “question marks” over the future of Glen Kamara with interest from Premier League and European clubs.”

The thing is, I don’t think this would surprise any Rangers fans. The only player who I think could justify another year is Jack based solely on him being a home grown player and being the youngest of those whose contracts are expiring.

Kamara just doesn’t seem to fit in any more. Yes, Beale loves him but, since he has taken over, the Finland international has had one good performance away to Hearts at Tynecastle. We need more than that, we need more than someone who will dribble the ball sideways for 30 yards and then play a five yard pass in games against Partick Thistle and the likes.

Nico Raskin has already shown that there is better out there, last summer was when this process should have begun and it has come back to bite us, Ross Wilson better not make the same mistake again.
