Rangers search for Allan McGregor’s replacement appears to have been ramped up a notch since the transfer window closed with multiple reports now claiming that Angus Gunn is the man who has been identified as our next number one.

Like Jon McLaughlin, Gunn is eligible to play for Scotland, however, he wouldn’t be classed as a home grown player should we sign him due to spending his academy years at Manchester City before a £13.5million move to Southampton in 2018.

And who was it that signed him for the Saints? Ross Wilson.

Writing for Football Insider, former Sky Sports reporter Pete O’Rourke has claimed that Rangers are in a good position should they want to make the Norwich City keeper the man to step into club legend McGregor’s boots:

“Rangers are well placed to sign Norwich goalkeeper Angus Gunn this summer as they target a new shot-stopper.

“The Ibrox club’s relationship with the Canaries could prove profitable after the two sides collaborated to bring midfielder Todd Cantwell to Glasgow in the January window.

“It is believed that Gunn has admirers at Rangers after his performances in the Championship for Norwich, while sporting director Ross Wilson oversaw his arrival at Southampton during his time at the Premier League club.”

There is no such thing as a risk free signing, especially when it comes to goalkeepers but, I’d be a lot happier if we sign someone that our sporting director has been aware of for some time and has extensive knowledge of. You would like to think that this would make signing Gunn a safer bet than going abroad. At least the 27-year old has Premier League and Championship experience which would stand him in good stead and played for a promotion winning team.

Norwich paid Southampton £5m to secure Gunn and, with his contract running until 2025, he wouldn’t come cheap, however, given the importance of the position, gambling on a bargain isn’t an option.

Think I would rather have a closer look at Remi Matthew’s, the St Johnstone loan from Crystal Palace, who has played brilliantly against us recently.
