You just know, in every press conference between now and the end of the season, Michael Beale will be asked for an update on the contract negotiations for Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent.

Connor Goldson spoke this week about his own saga and that there is little he can say to two players who have their own personal circumstances that are entirely different to his own and if, like him, they wait until the end of the season to make their decision then there is little anyone else can do.

Speaking to Football Insider, Alan Hutton reckons that the short-term bonus of having both players staying until the summer should be seen as a good thing, even if they could leave for nothing after the final ball is kicked:

“I think they are big players in terms of the dressing room and on the pitch.

“I think the big thing at this moment in time is that they did not leave in January, so that is a big plus for him moving forward. To close the gap on Celtic at the top of the league they need those sorts of players.

“It is still up in the air in terms of will they or won’t they. We do not actually know. Yes they have got them until they end of the season and I think they have both improved. It is going to be down to the players ultimately.

“If the deal is right they will sign. If not then they are still able to leave in the summer.”

The key to replacing players like Morelos and Kent is identifying possible options as soon as possible. Look at Todd Cantwell. There are clear similarities with Kent in how he goes about his business and it would be easy to see him fill a similar role under Beale.

As for Morelos, the Gers gaffer has already revealed that he has his eye on a striker so you would like to think that the planning is already under way in terms of making an offer, one way or the other, depending on their contract status.

What we do know though, is that if we are to win the two cups that are available to us and close the gap at the top of the league then having Morelos and Kent in the squad, and at their best, gives us a better chance than if they weren’t around.
