There’s a fascination as a football supporter of getting players back who have previously been a success at your club, or ones who have shown that they should’ve got more of a chance.

We saw in spectacular fashion with Kyle Lafferty that it doesn’t always work out, or with Kris Boyd either for that matter,, but in Steven Davis it goes to show that there are always exceptions.

With Jermain Defoe unlikely to have his contract renewed there is scope – and certainly space on the wage bill – to bring in another striker that will be required to contribute whenever he is called upon but doesn’t have the pressure of leading the line on a weekly basis.

Step forward Martyn Waghorn. Now, I’m not saying that we should sign him without any questions being asked but at 31-years old – and still rated at £3million – he might consider the opportunity to return to Glasgow.

He’s out of contract in the summer, not on massive wages, knows the club and can play either through the middle or in support of a central striker on either side. In short, he would be a decent option as a back-up – remember, he scored 44 goals in 78 games for us.

Waghorn?

With one goal every four games for Derby County, he’s hardly prolific but then he has played most of his football out wide, where, of course, he also ended up with Rangers due to Kenny Miller getting shoehorned into the number nine slot.

I’m sure that Ross Wilson will have other names on his list and Waghorn’s return is highly unlikely but it would be interesting to see how he performed in a team with better players around him – and a significantly better coaching team in the dugout.
