Rangers transfer business became an awful lot simpler when Connor Goldson decided that his future lay in Glasgow, the vice-captain putting pen to paper on a four-year contract which has been met with widespread delight.

With the addition of John Souttar, our defence looks to be in decent nick, however there is still one question mark and it surrounds the future of Leon Balogun.

Speaking after the Scottish Cup win over Hearts the Nigerian international said about his dream to stay at the club:

“Everyone who watches me around the club knows I’ve fallen in love with this club.

“What I said about getting knocked down and getting back up – that’s something I’ve had in my career.

“I’ve had a lot of downs in my career. That’s why me and Rangers are a good fit.

“Even in the final, I had to go through this and the support was outstanding.

“I would love to stay. I hope they know that and I hope I can announce something soon.”

We’ve already seen Scott Arfield and Steven Davis extend their contracts but Balogun’s case is different in that we have made a new signing for that position and there is the emergence of Leon King, what goes in his favour though is that there is unlikely to be a future for either Niko Katic or Jack Simpson if we can get fees in for them.

With Filip Helander’s injury history, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to retain the 43-cap international, it also means that Calvin Bassey can play more often at left-back rather than in the middle with The 4th Official claiming – as part of an article on our interest in Mateo Cassierra – that there could be an announcement soon:

“I was also told that there are contract negotiations going on between Rangers and Leon Balogun, but things are very fluid right now. While the player wants to stay, it would be interesting to see if today’s Connor Goldson deal has any effect on the Nigerian staying on.”

If Balogun signed for another year you would expect it to be his last with King, hopefully, getting more game time alongside Goldson next campaign, for the youngster, having so many experienced and quality centre-halves to learn from can only be a good thing.
