As Connor Goldson has discovered, Rangers has a serious habit of getting right under your skin – his new contract has proved that.

A stunning four-year deal was announced for the central defender yesterday, providing a surprise, seemingly unlikely but very welcome conclusion to a long saga.

In the end it came down to time and feeling. Goldson stated that he wanted to discuss the situation from his family, assess the options and make the best decision. To his credit, he has turned down serious money elsewhere to stick with what he knows and loves.

After four seasons in Glasgow, fighting for trophies, winning a league title, a Scottish Cup and that momentous run to Seville, imagine swapping it for the bottom end of the Premier League and damage limitation or a long-slog in the Championship. In the end, the winning mentality and family life, importantly, won the day.

The 29-year old stated:

“I’m really happy. Obviously, I’ve been here for a long time. I’ve been here for four years and everybody knows I had a decision to make and I went away with my family over the last week and we made that decision which was to stay here.”

“We’re all settled here, my family is settled here and football-wise I’m happy. I thought this was the right decision to make and I’m really happy to have made it.”

Goldson has been a rock and an almost ever-present over all he ups and downs of those last four years, this new contract will provide further stability and consistency for an important period ahead.

It is a massive vote of confidence in the club and Gio van Bronckhorst that he has decided to stay. His age and profile meant a top 10 EPL move would have been very difficult, so to play every week it would have been a step down from Rangers in terms of scale, expectations and that demand to win.

Nothing less will do, no second best for Connor Goldson.
