Whilst the familar names of Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Ajax won the English, German and Dutch top flight leagues, respectively, there has been something of a changing of the guard across Europe with several Champions being crowned for the first time in quite a while.

Of course, Rangers won the Scottish Premiership in style this season, for the 55th time.

Steven Gerrard’s men had the campaign wrapped up two months ago, with last week’s party raising the roof as well as the trophy!

Elsewhere this weekend, there has been ‘new’ success for Atletico in Spain pipping Real to the La Liga finish line, with Luiz Suarez front and centre.

Tonight in France, Lille secured the French title, beating big spending PSG on a memorable last day.

Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan turned back the clock with a fine season in Italy as runaway leaders – their nearest challengers were city rivals AC Milan who finished 12 points behind.

Elsewhere in recent weeks, Sporting emerged from the shadow of city rivals Benfica and Porto to claim the Primeira Liga crown, ending a long wait.

Below is a list of the long wait for title success, that has now been ended for several big clubs across the continent:

  • Rangers crowned Scottish champions for the first time in 10 years
  • Atletico crowned Spanish champions for the first time in seven years
  • Inter crowned Italian champions for the first time in 11 years
  • Lille crowned French champions for the first time in 10 years
  • Sporting crowned Portuguese champions for the first time in 19 years
