Rangers Women fell to a 1-2 reverse at home to Celtic today, falling to third in the SWPL1 table in the process.

Coming soon after the recent defeat to Glasgow City which damaged Gers title hopes, this latest big game disappointment – three Old Firm losses for the season – is a bitter pill for Malky Thomson and his team to swallow.

Kelly Clark put the visitors ahead on 21 minutes, glancing home a header from an inviting corner but very soon after, Rachel McLauchlan took responsibility from distance and her effort evaded the Celtic keeper to equalise.

Chances came and went for both teams into the second half but Rangers did not capitalise when their opportunities presented themselves.

On 82 minutes, Sarah Ewens grabbed the winner for Celtic, meaning they leapfrog Rangers into second place.

With three games remaining, it will be an uphill task for Thomson’s side to secure a top-two finish and with it, a place in next season’s prestigious Champions League.

The Gers are now relying on Celtic and leaders Glasgow City dropping points but first of all they need to take care of their own business, to bring the season to a positive close by securing maximum points.

Next up is Forfar Farmington on Wednesday evening.
