Rangers have, this week, been linked with adding more firepower to their forward line in January with the Championship’s top goal scorer, Jerry Yates, said to be getting monitored by Ross Wilson and his recruitment team.

Recently the striker has been moved out to the left-hand side of the attack and it has paid dividends, two goals in his last game and eight for the season stopping Blackpool from being routed to the bottom of the table.

Football Insider have now reported what sort of transfer fee would be needed to see Yates head up the M6:

“Blackpool are braced for offers for Rangers target Jerry Yates in January, sources have told Football Insider.

“The Championship club are aware of strong interest in their star striker from Premier League clubs as well as the Glasgow giants.

“Blackpool value Yates at around £4million, and believe his price tag will climb if he continues to score prolifically in the Championship.

“He has a contract that runs until the summer of 2024 and includes the option of a further 12 months.”

I’m still not convinced that, for the money being mentioned, Yates is the type of player we need. Against Napoli our biggest area of weakness was once again exposed, a lack of mobility and pace in midfield. Creativity and goals are also important but, at the moment, we just seem so one-dimensional through the middle of the park.

Evander would be my choice, however, he is the subject of interest from the States and their pockets are deeper than ours nowadays. A true sign of the times when a young, creative midfielder is potentially heading to Major League Soccer instead of potentially staying in Europe to play in the Champions League.

Yates looks like a decent player but would he start ahead of Ryan Kent on the left or any of our strikers through the middle? I don’t think he would which makes this story either one that has come from the agent or the club looking to bump up his fee.

Maybe a shout if we get rid of Morelos and Roofe in January but I certainly wouldn`t trust Wilson and his team to sign a player for that money. We should keep the money until he has been sacked. I notice Football Insider didn`t name the EPL clubs watching Yates , because there won`t be any .The EPL clubs don`t sign players from the likes of Blackpool.
