One man who knew to score goals was Ally McCoist, Rangers record goalscorer might have had his European exploits bettered by Alfredo Morelos, however, the Gers legend has been quick to criticise the Colombian’s efforts against Napoli last night.

Speaking on BT Sport, via Football Scotland, McCoist wasn’t too harsh on Morelos’s previous attempts, however, when faced with an open goal, the returning striker really should have done better, a sentiment echoed by the pundit:

“This one he’s got to score. It’s not a great ball from Kent and Yilmaz does well. The timing of Morelos’s run is perfect and I don’t know whether he takes his eye off it but he’s got to score it, it goes under his foot.

“No, there’s no bobble there. I’d love to give him a bit of help there but there’s none there at all. You’ve got to score, that’s as good a chance as you’re going to get.

“I’m looking at him and it’s a catch 22 situation because you have to say domestically Colak’s form and goal record doesn’t merit Morelos a place in the team so it’s a catch 22.”

Morelos, on another day could easily have had a couple of goals to his name and, for all that he looks a lot fitter, his finishing has been nowhere near his previous levels or that of Antonio Colak.

McCoist is right, there’s no excuse for missing the chance that he did. If he’d slid in, the ball probably would have made it’s way into the goal somehow and, at 2-1, you never know how the momentum might change.

If anything, the Napoli game perfectly summed up our Champions League game. Long periods where we looked miles out our depth added to an inability to take any chances when they did come our way, compounded by losing goals that – although well taken – could best be described as amateur, much like Morelos’s finishing.
