Rangers squad is in rude health at the moment with only a few minor tweaks needed to freshen up and improve it for the challenges ahead next season.

One player linked throughout the season has been Newcastle United’s Jacob Murphy with the right-sided utility man approaching the last 12 months of his contract. Speaking to Football Insider, former England keeper, Paul Robinson, believes that for all that he would improve the starting XI, fans might not be too excited about the move.

“Would Rangers fans be that excited by Murphy?

“He would be a smart addition but I don’t think he would be a great addition. He has done well at Newcastle in a team that has struggled this season.

“I think Steven Gerrard could develop him and improve him though. He could help him realise his potential.

“While I say he would not be an exciting signing, he would certainly strengthen their starting XI and walk straight in. Newcastle will want to keep hold of him though.”

Murphy’s ability to play anywhere down the right-hand side would be a useful trait and we have seen – up until this season – that the space alongside Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos has been the most difficult one to fill, he would certainly be an upgrade on Jordan Jones and Brandon Barker who were both deployed in the role earlier in the season.

The good thing is, is that we don’t have to get Murphy, Ianis Hagi, Kemar Roofe and now Scott Wright have contributed throughout the season, if anything, the reality is the opposite to what Robinson has predicted – fans would be excited but I’m not sure the former £12million man’s inclusion in the first XI would be as straight forward as he makes out.
