Jack Simpson has been on Steven Gerrard’s radar for quite some time with reports in 2018 putting him close to signing a loan deal with Rangers, however, the deal never came off and we ended up with Joe Worrall.

The England Under-21 international has all but been confirmed as our latest arrival with the potential of an immediate deal the hold up for his announcement alongside Nnamdi Ofoborh.

At 1.90m tall (over 6ft 2 inches in old money) he would be more than capable of handling the physical side of Scottish football and the aerial bombardment that would be served up on a weekly basis plus, being a natural left footer he would add a balance to the back four alongside Connor Goldson, there’s just something aesthetically pleasing about having that quality in the heart of defence.

His manager at Bournemouth, Eddie Howe, was full of praise for the £1million rated centre-half whilst they were still in the Premier League when Simpson was being linked with moves to Championship clubs including Derby County:

“He’s a lovely footballer.

“He’s obviously a really good size so he adds aerially and physically.

“He’s got a really nice mentality, very good attitude”

There is obviously a huge difference between having the mentality to play for Bournemouth and for Rangers but at least, Howe tries to instil a style of play that involves his defenders having to be comfortable on the ball – we’ve all seen across the other side of Glasgow what can happen when you sign a defender that is scared of the half-way line and of being charged with bringing the ball out from the back.

When would you like to see Simpson and Ofoborh?

It’s a signing that makes sense and he is obviously a player that has been on the radar for some time, that Ross Wilson has also been keen to get the deal done shows that we could be on to a winner.
