Former Rangers star Ronald de Boer has backed current Ibrox first-teamer Alfredo Morelos in the ongoing debate about his discipline, or lack thereof.

The Colombian attacker has received ten yellow cards and three red cards, with one rescinded, so far this season, more than anyone else in the entire Rangers squad.

He’s been criticised by fans and pundits for his actions, with many supporters growing tired of avoidable cards that are seriously hindering Steven Gerrard’s side.

De Boer though has shown understanding for the red hot striker, telling The Daily Record:

I have a lot of sympathy for Morelos. He looks an exciting player and he has scored a lot of goals this season.

He is a young player and it’s not easy to play with a club the size of Rangers. There is huge expectation but also other teams and supporters will try to influence you on the pitch.

He is an important figure in the team, and not just because of his goals and assists. Yes, he gets fired up, but you need those kinds of players in your team. But you also need to keep them on the pitch, so it’s important not to overreact when there is a big atmosphere or opponents are trying to kick you.

It’s something he’ll have to learn and figure out.

Given the criticism that has flooded Morelos’ way in the media over the last few weeks, it’s pleasing to see he still has some supporters.

There is no doubt that it’s an aspect of the Colombian’s game that needs to change, but perhaps too much has been made of his discipline issues. Some of the reaction has been well over the top.

Scoring 17 goals and assisting 10 times this season, it’s clear Rangers need Morelos more than ever, so we’re hoping he starts hitting the headlines for the right reasons again after he serves his suspension against Hamilton today.
