Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has made his intentions clear for the upcoming January transfer window, challenging the club to bring in the quality required to make progress at home and in Europe.

The recruitment team at Ibrox went for a quantity over quality approach in the Summer transfer window, with mixed success. Two of the loan signings sanctioned by Gerrard have already returned to their parent clubs and others are struggling to play week-to-week.

The boss is determined to attract the right players though and made his hopes clear in his Friday press conference.

As quoted by The Herald, Gerrard said:

For us to come again and improve on this journey we certainly need to add to the squad. We need to bring a bit more quality in and whether we can attract them or afford them that’s a different story.

But if we are to have any ambition of getting beyond the group stages or even having a crack at the Champions League then we have to keep trying to recruit well and trying to add quality. We need to improve on the quality we have.

I think at the top end of the pitch it’s clear to me that we’re a bit short in terms of numbers.

It’s clear that Gerrard is looking for attacking signings and while he’s bringing a bit of reality with his comments about being able to afford the quality we need to shine in Europe, it’s at least encouraging he is looking for the right players instead of journeyman who simply bulk up the squad.

It will be a difficult transfer window for the club but with the exit of Ovie Ejaria and Umar Sadiq, there’s now a bit of room to bring in an attacking midfielder and forward.

Both could really freshen up this Gers side and have us motoring in the second half of the season.
