Random transfer stories will always pop up from time to time, however, when one refuses to go away and the source is close to the player, it’s a lot easier to believe there is something in it.

One such player is Gustavo Hamer, the Brazilian born Dutch youth cap who has been tearing up the Championship for Coventry City this season, the 23-year old being “in talks” over a £4million move to Ibrox and has been linked on more than one occasion, most recently from media outlets close to his club.

Speaking on the Heart and Hand Scout Report podcast hosted by Adam Thornton, football analysis writer and scout for Five Yards website, Josh Hobbs, believes that Hamer is the one player, out of all those that have been recently linked, that could make a real difference and be a genuine target.

“He is the one that I would suggest,” claimed Hobbs

He then went on to say that Hamer is “similar to (Genarro) Gattuso” and that “I can see it, Hamer is the one that I could see fitting into the Rangers team”.

Hobbs describes the defensive midfielder as a player capable of operating at either end of the park and one whose aggression in the tackle has cost him on a few occasions, hence the obvious comparison to Gattuso, but it is his ability to play almost any role in the Rangers engine room and more affordable price tag that has seen him tipped for a move to Ibrox.

Who finished as Rangers top goal scorer this season?

The key to Rangers recruitment model is getting players before they make the “big” move in their career, if they have that potential, and the analysis of Hamer suggests that he has that level of ability – like Ryan Kent, he might need a bigger fee than usual, but we have all seen how that has turned out.
