The Rangers academy had it’s latest success story over the weekend with a Champions League winner’s medal now part of Auchenhowie history.

Billy Gilmour left Rangers when Pedro Caixinha was in charge – which seems a lifetime ago – with many thinking that he was making a mistake, joining a club which, historically, very rarely gives opportunities to youngsters.

However, he has proven, beyond doubt, that he is more than talented enough to make his mark at the highest level and now has one of football’s most coveted prizes in his back pocket – it’s safe to say that it turned out alright for him in the end and that he should, rightly, have no regrets.

Since returning from injury in the autumn, Gilmour hasn’t featured much under Thomas Tuchel but he has plenty of time on his side, he needs game time to continue his development so perhaps a return to Ibrox would be a good fit after all.

Who finished as Rangers top goal scorer this season?

Chelsea’s tactics have changed under Tuchel, the organisation they demonstrated against Manchester City was very much like peak “Beale-ball” in the Europa League, if Gilmour was to head back up the road, it wouldn’t be a culture shock in terms of style of play, he would also be playing for a side where you have to win every game and compete for every trophy, not something he would get on loan at West Ham or Aston Villa.

The most important thing is that he would bring quality to Rangers midfield, there also wouldn’t be the argument that we are developing someone else’s player, technically he would only be continuing to do something he started years ago in Glasgow, that he never got to play for the first-team has always bothered me and it’s a reflection of how much of a shambles we were when he left – you never know though, we might just get to see that put right next season, a Champions League winner in our side and one of our own in the heart of midfield?
