You just know what’s coming next.

If/when Steven Gerrard is announced as Aston Villa manager, we will see all our top players getting linked with a move to the Premier League.

It happened when Brendan Rodgers went to Leicester City, it’s just what happens, managers like to have certain players that they can trust at their disposal – Gerrard himself brought several players from Liverpool in his early years because he saw them as low risk and knew what they could do.

But who would he want at Villa?

We all know who his favourites are, Connor Goldson, Ryan Kent, Glen Kamara and Joe Aribo. Obviously James Tavernier falls under that category too but he would be more likely to try to persuade his protege, Nathan Patterson, given the respective ages of the two.

It’s Villa’s defence that has been the biggest problem this season – conceding two goals a game in the league – so I’d expect Goldson and Kamara to be pretty close to the top of his shopping list given the fees that they would command, big for us, peanuts for the Premier League.

With Goldson approaching the last six-months of his contract though, I wouldn’t expect him to be signing a new one soon if there is the possibility of him moving a stones throw away from where he grew up and playing for a manager who trusts him.

If Ross Wilson wasn’t a busy man before, it’s safe to assume that he is going to be working pretty long hours in the next few months.
