Another week, another low block – Steven Gerrard never fully mastered the right approach after three years in charge and, if anything, we still had the same problems shortly before he left as we did when he first took over.

From a fans point of view, it helps if you appreciate that it probably isn’t going to be pretty and that patience is a virtue.

Speaking to Rangers TV, via Sky Sports, as part of the build up to St Johnstone coming to Ibrox, Giovanni van Bronckhorst has backed his side to continue improving and for his new look side to get to grips wit the game plan – one that they will have to get used to:

“You need to have our positions right on the pitch. The movement needs to be there at the right time. The speed of passing needs to be high, otherwise you won’t find any space.

“But we are improving in those departments in every game. We play more games together and with that the players get used to one another.

“We are getting stronger and stronger each week and with each game we play. Of course, we saw last week against Kilmarnock we had a team defending in a low block. There were not many spaces for us to play in.

“But I think we approached the game really well, with a lot of patience. Sometimes I think you need patience in the home games.”

Gio is, of course, right. When faced with 11 players, most of whom are within 10 yards of their own box, it’s never going to be easy to find space to create chances. Throwing cross after cross into the box will only work a percentage of the time and another way through has to be found.

Individual brilliance is one way, having players who can beat a man and others whose movement is hard for defenders to track also helps and Gio has managed to add a few more players with these skill sets over the summer, hopefully, they take less than three years to figure it out.
